ISBN: 978-960-9409-08-7This catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name, presented on the occasion of the centenary of the first book-manifesto of Russian Futurism. Bringing together early works of the Russian avant-garde up to 1915, the exhibition focuses on the period of Cubo-Futurism and the formative influences of French Cubism and Italian Futurism. All works are drawn from the Costakis Collection, held at the formerly State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki (MOMus Museum Of Modern Art) .
At the heart of the exhibition is Sadok Sudei (“A Trap for Judges”), the landmark anthology-manifesto first published in 1910, marking the inaugural declaration of Russian Futurism. A second anthology under the same title appeared in 1913, deepening and extending the movement’s programme. Both publications are presented alongside works of the period, situating the literary and visual avant-garde within a shared historical moment.
The exhibition features two significant bodies of work shown here for the first time: drawings made by Lyubov Popova during her travels in France and Italy, and Cubo-Futurist studies by Ivan Klyun. Together these works illuminate the direct absorption of Western modernism into the Russian avant-garde at a critical juncture.
Also on view are early works tracing the passage from Symbolism to Cubo-Futurism by Natalia Goncharova, Elena Guro, Mikhail Larionov, Ivan Puni, Olga Rozanova, Nadezhda Udaltsova, and others — a survey of the transitional energies that defined the movement’s formative years.
