Catalogue of the exhibition of the same title. In Moscow during the second half of the twentieth century, two collectors, George Costakis and Yakov Rubinstein, assembled, in parallel, two of the most important private art collections of their time. Working within an environment of severe political and cultural constraints, both men chose to follow not the official narrative of art, but their own inner compass—guided by intuition, passion, and an unwavering belief in the enduring value of artistic creation.

The exhibition is organised around a series of thematic sections:

  • Female figures appear as muses, objects of desire, protagonists, and projections of social stereotypes, inviting visitors to reflect on the dynamics of the gaze and the construction of representation.
  • Fairy tales, legends, and literary narratives come to life through figures such as Tsar Saltan and Doctor Miracle, the stories of Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, and the haunting imagery of the Dance of Death, revealing the timeless power of storytelling in the visual arts.
  • Domestic interiors—rooms, furnishings, and scenes of everyday life—offer intimate glimpses into private life during the early decades of the twentieth century. Alongside them unfolds the world of the street, populated by performers, wanderers, marginalised individuals, and figures who have often remained absent from official historical narratives.
  • A rare group of works created in the Gulags forms one of the exhibition’s most compelling sections. These works bear witness not only to a historical reality but also to the resilience of artistic expression under the most extreme conditions.

The exhibition has been made possible through the invaluable support and close collaboration of the collector’s granddaughter, Tanya Rubinstein-Horowitz (Düsseldorf).
